Artwork formats
Although the directory studio produces the majority of artwork from customer’s instructions, artwork can be provided directly from the client or via a third party.
Accepted programmes
The formats that we would like adverts supplied to us from customers are as follows:
Adobe Illustrator. This is the best format to supply adverts to us, but if anybody does they must convert all fonts to ‘outlines’ and ‘embed’ any images contained within the document, if they do not then they have to supply all images and all fonts that are used in the document, in the same folder as the supplied advert.
Adobe Photoshop. This is perfectly acceptable providing the image is no less than 300dpi, anything below this resolution will be rejected. They must also flatten the artwork so no layers or fonts are contained within the advert, failing this they must supply fonts once more in the same folder as the advert.
Quark Express. If people use this package they must again supply all fonts and images as there is no option to embed either in this document. It actually says that you can embed these items in the program but this does not work when we come to convert the Quark file into an acceptable pre-press advert.
EPS files. We can accept these providing all images and fonts are supplied within the same folder.
PDF files. These will only be accepted if the PDF has had fonts embedded when created.
We can also accept ai, psd, tiff and jpeg files.
The following formats, if supplied to us will be rejected:
Microsoft Word - (Text only can be provided in this format)
Microsoft Powerpoint
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Publisher
Corel Draw (or any other Corel programs)
Accepted media
We can accept the following media types:
CD
DVD
Iomega Zip Disk
3.5” Floppy Disk
Bromides
If customers wish to ISDN artwork to us, our number is 01482 229265.
Please supply the artwork in a folder bearing the company name as displayed in the advert and indicate that it is to be used for the Know Micro Directory.
Please note:
All adverts must be contained within a border. Pay special attention to insurance company adverts, as many of these place legal text outside the main body of the advert, this is not allowed.
If using graduated tints, the tint ratio can be nothing less than 20% and not more than 70%.
Converting text to outlines involves changing the text into a graphic image which then renders the text un-editable. From a printing point of view this helps as the studio do not need a copy of the original font. Failure to convert fonts to outlines can result in text defaulting which will mean the advert will not look as originally designed, or worse, the text may break up and become illegible.
Images taken from the web are not acceptable due to copyright and resolution issues.
Pictures on the internet are at 72Dpi and our print resolution is 300Dpi, therefore most images are too poor to
use. What looks ok on a computer will appear pixellated or ‘blocky’ when used on a printed advert.
The answer is to supply any pictures or logos on disc, or failing that as paper copies which can then be
scanned.
